Photo of an advert in a magazine, for

I have a thing for American gossip magazines and my Father-in-Law and his wife brought me back some from a recent trip to New York. There are a lots of things to take issue with in magazines aimed at women but this ad had me enraged.

Turn your Mom into a MILF?!?! I hate that term. For the uninformed a MILF is a “Mother I’d Like to Fuck.” Now I have nothing wrong with someone wanting to sleep with me but I do have a problem with the inference that mothers are undesirable in general but this one is good for a one night stand. Because you aren’t say she’s MILD– you want to fuck her not date her. She’s a receptacle, something to be used, bragged about and that’s it. Something that we see inferred about women all too often in society but generally not when promoting a Mother’s Day gift.

I’m all for women embracing their sexuality and I certainly don’t think mothers are asexual but I still think MILF is overtly sexist and awful. It is blatant objectification that just reinforces the same old patriarchal views that women are only useful/valuable as sex objects. I’m a Mom and I’d like to think that being a Mom doesn’t negate any possibly attractiveness but I also don’t want to be objectified either. Is it just me that hates this term?
